BROTO ALPONA
Finger Painted Messages to the Gods
This film seeks to preserve and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Bengali women and their age-old practice of Alpona. Through intricate finger-painted designs on clay floors and walls, these women expressed hopes and desires to their Gods, utilizing art a form of communication. The tradition of Broto Alponas, rooted in spiritual rituals, reflects their artistic talents and deep connection to their beliefs. As this beautiful practice fades from memory, we aim to showcase its significance and inspire a renewed appreciation for this unique form of expression.

Nestled between the vibrant red pala and the sturdy noa, these milky white bangles symbolize a woman's married status, much like the sindoor on her forehead. In rural Bengal, young girls visit the sankhari, the maker of these bangles, with their families to select pieces that signify wishes for their' long lives and joyful marriages. Despite evolving styles, the tradition of wearing sankha is at risk of fading away in the face of western influences, making it all the more precious.
